How to Prep for An In-Home Session

While there isn’t much prep for an in-home engagement session, here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way.

Clear out clutter… but you don’t need to deep-clean

You want to make sure that your home is relatively clean when your photographer arrives. 99.9% of the time, when your photographer is taking your engagement photos, we will also capture everything around you. So make sure that in the area where you’ll be taking photos, items are put away and your home is relatively neat before your photographer arrives.

However, that doesn’t mean you need to deep clean your home! Grabbing the spare change from the couch cushions or dusting the overhead fans isn’t a priority and probably won’t make or break your engagement photos. Stick to an overall clean and organized look, but no need to go overboard.

Light Matters

Light is everything when it comes to in-home engagement sessions. Think about which rooms in your space get the best natural light and when during the day that happens. As a natural light photographer (I can use overheads if needed, of course), the right light makes a huge difference in your photos. I usually recommend shooting during the daytime so everything feels bright, cozy, and full of life.

Don’t be afraid to step outside the box

The best part about in-home sessions is that you can pretty much do whatever you want. For Edwin and Taylor’s engagement session, we made homemade pasta, but who’s to say you can’t bake cookies or watch your favorite movie? The possibilities are endless, so don’t feel confined to only a few ideas. If you need some inspiration for more in-home engagement photos, just click here!
