First things first — congratulations! Seriously. This is such an exciting time in your lives, and if you’re already feeling a little overwhelmed, that’s completely normal. Wedding planning has a lot of moving pieces, and I’m here to help!
I might be a little biased (okay… very biased), but wedding photography is one thing I truly believe is worth investing in. These photos are what you’ll have long after the day is over. That said, finding a photographer you actually connect with and who feels right for you can be hard, especially if you’re not totally sure what you’re looking for.
So instead of overthinking it, I put together a list of 8 questions to ask your wedding photographer. They’ll help you narrow things down, feel more confident in your choice, and hopefully make this part of planning feel a little easier. And hey — if that photographer ends up being me, I’d love that! You can get in touch with me here!
How long have you been photographing weddings?
Experience does matter when it comes to handling a wedding day. Your photographer should absolutely create beautiful images, but just as important is the experience they provide — before, during, and after your wedding.
If you’re looking for someone with solid wedding experience or a specific kind of expertise, this is a really important question to ask. The more experience a photographer has, the more likely they are to charge accordingly — and that’s because you’re not just paying for photos. You’re paying for their knowledge, education, gear, problem-solving skills, and time spent in the wedding industry. A lot of that experience shows up in the way they prepare, communicate, and invest in their business, so it’s something to keep in mind when thinking about budget and what really matters to you in a wedding photographer.
As for me, I’ve been photographing weddings full-time since 2019. Honestly, life kind of nudged me exactly where I was meant to be. Wedding photography has always felt like my calling, and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love this job, the people, and the stories I get to document, and I’m so grateful I get to do it every single day! You can find more of my work here!
What is your photography style?
Finding a wedding photographer whose style actually matches what you’re envisioning for your day is huge. One important thing to know upfront: 99.9% of the time, photographers aren’t going to change their editing style just for you—and that’s not a bad thing. Editing styles take years to develop and are a big part of what makes each photographer’s work unique.
That’s why it’s so important to choose someone whose photos already feel like you. Before reaching out to a photographer, take a moment to really look through their work and ask yourself if you can picture your own wedding captured that way.
There are so many different editing styles out there, so don’t be afraid to be picky. Make sure the photographer you’re inquiring with aligns with what you love. If you want to see some of my favorite work and get a feel for my editing style, you can click here! I’d describe my photography as timeless and true-to-tone, with a mix of digital and film. I focus heavily on real connection and emotion, and I let those moments guide each gallery so every couple’s photos feel authentic and uniquely theirs.
Tip: Ask yourself, “Do I envision my wedding photos like this?” while scrolling through their website & social media platforms. This will help you better gauge whether you like their style for your wedding or just enjoy looking at their work.
What does working with you look like? How involved are you in the process?
Anybody who has ever worked with a wedding photographer will tell you that wedding photography is not just about getting pretty photos back. You’re not only investing in the final product but also in the experience. You must find a wedding photographer who fits your exact needs.
My approach is pretty simple: I’m not just showing up on your wedding day. I’m right by your side throughout a lot of the planning process, too. Whether you need vendor recommendations, someone to bounce ideas off of, or even a little emotional support along the way—I’ve got you.
About three months before your wedding, we’ll go over your full timeline together to make sure everything feels solid and stress-free, so when the day comes, things can flow as smoothly as possible.
When you’re choosing a wedding photographer, it’s a great idea to ask what their process looks like and how involved they are leading up to the wedding day. Every photographer works differently, so it’s also important to know how much support you want throughout the planning process and to make sure those expectations align. You can see how my past wedding clients felt about their wedding experience with me here!
How long until we get our final gallery?
Most of the time, wedding photographers will tell you upfront how long it’ll take to receive your final gallery. If it’s not mentioned, definitely ask — it’s always better to have clear, realistic expectations going in.
I know once your wedding day is over, you’re riding that post-wedding high and dying to see it all. Just remember your photographer is carefully going through thousands of images, narrowing them down, and editing each one with intention. That part takes time.
Final galleries can take up to around ten weeks to be delivered, and while the wait can feel long, it’s absolutely worth it. My turnaround time is 6–10 weeks, with an option to upgrade to a 2–4 week rush delivery for an additional fee if you just can’t wait.
What happens if you get sick?
This is quite literally a wedding photographer’s worst nightmare. The last thing we want is to get sick on your special day. While we do everything in our power to prevent this, sometimes life just happens. If the time comes and your wedding photographer gets sick, it’s important to know who their backup is… or if they even have one! Usually, wedding photographers will have an associate shooter take their place on the wedding day.
An associate shooter is essentially someone who takes your photographer’s place on wedding days. They have experience with weddings and can outline how the day will flow. The associate photographer is usually someone the wedding photographer trusts and knows will produce quality work. Remember that an associate photographer does NOT edit your images. An associate photographer only photographs the wedding, and your wedding photographer will still edit your images. While this isn’t the outcome any wedding photographer wants, just know that having a backup plan and ensuring your wedding experience is perfect are the main priorities.
Is there a chance my photos will end up missing?
Losing wedding photos is literally everyone’s worst nightmare, so making sure your photographer has solid backup systems in place is huge. This is one of those questions that really matters. Most professional wedding photographers use cameras with two SD card slots, not just one. That means every photo is being backed up in real time in case a card gets corrupted, damaged, or goes missing. On top of that, your images should be backed up in multiple places after the wedding—like external hard drives—so they’re protected every step of the way.
Missing wedding photos is a hard no, so definitely ask your photographer how they handle backups and file safety. As for me, I shoot with two cameras that both have dual card slots, and I back everything up on two separate hard drives. And (knock on wood 🤞) I’ve never lost a single wedding photo.
Do you have insurance?
Insurance is definitely something you’ll want to ask your wedding photographer about. Most professional photographers carry insurance in case of emergencies. It’s not just about protecting their gear if it’s stolen or damaged; it also provides liability coverage if something unexpected happens on the wedding day. Having an insured photographer helps protect everyone involved and adds a little extra peace of mind.
It might not be the most exciting question, but it’s an important one to check off your list. For me, I’m fully insured — covering my business, my equipment, and all the beautiful venues I get the chance to work at.
If I need you longer on my wedding day, will you stay? Is there an extra charge?
Every wedding photographer has their own policies on staying later than planned. When you book me for your wedding date, that day is fully yours. I don’t schedule anything else, so my focus is entirely on you.
Unless we’ve talked through specific timing or limitations ahead of time, most photographers are happy to stay a bit longer. That said, extra coverage usually comes at an hourly rate, depending on how much additional time is needed.
My approach is a little different. I offer full-day or full-weekend coverage. I offer this because I truly want to be there for as much of the experience as makes sense — from start to finish. We also go over your photography timeline in detail ahead of time, so everything is set up, and there are no surprise late-night fees or last-minute stress. Just you enjoying your day, knowing it’s all covered.
Finding your dream wedding photographer doesn’t have to be stressful! Hopefully, these 8 questions to ask your photographer will help you feel confident and set you up for success!
